If you love nature, Slovenia is the perfect place for you. In this guide, I talk about the Eco Resort Beneath Velika Planina, one of the best in the country.

In recent years more and more people have decided to spend their holidays focusing more on nature and environmental protection. So words such as Eco Holidays or Eco-Tourism are becoming increasingly common.
This trend is clear if you look at the rising number of Eco Resorts all over the world. Some time ago, during my trip to Jordan, I had the chance to stay in one of the best Eco Resorts in the World, in Feynan, and I can say that it was a great experience.
When thinking about holidays and nature in Europe, Slovenia is definitely worth a mention. I traveled to Slovenia some years ago but I didn’t have the chance to see much. This time, though, I visited several places and I appreciated how clean and nice this country is, especially places like Bled and the capital Ljubljana. Even less touristic places have several bicycle paths and very well-kept trekking trails. In this regard, Slovenia reminds me of a lot of countries in northern Europe, but it’s a lot more accessible moneywise and weatherwise.
On this trip I spent a few days between Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj, the capital Ljubljana and two days at the Eco Resort Beneath Velika Planina, an Eco-Resort quite close to Ljubljana, fully operative since 2017.
In this article, you will find my travel guide to Slovenia, don’t miss it if you want to visit other places in this country.
What is an Eco Resort

What actually is an Eco Resort? It’s generally a hotel or any type of accommodation that has made important environmental improvements to its structure in order to minimize its impact on the environment and follows the practices of green living.
These structures are usually certified green by an independent third party or by the state they are located in. Traditionally, these hotels were mostly presented as Eco Lodges because of their location, often in jungles, and their design inspired by the use of traditional building methods applied by skilled local craftsmen.
The concept behind these accommodations is respect for the environment.
Eco Resort Beneath Velika Planina

The bungalows at the Eco Resort Beneath Velika Planina are inspired by the traditional baitas used by the shepherds for centuries in the Kamnik Alps.
As you can see in the opening picture of this guide, the original wooden cottages are really beautiful and have a unique style, different from everything else you have probably seen in the Alps. Today they are not used by the shepherds anymore, but only by tourists in the summer months. It takes about 40 mins to get there from Ljubljana and it’s definitely worth a visit.
The baita houses in the mountain have only one room but the bungalows at the Eco Resort are a bit more comfortable.

Every bungalow is a two-story building with an open space on the first floor and a bed on the second floor. On the first floor, there is a small kitchen, a living room, a double bed, and a bathroom. It can host up to 5 people.

Those who want a little bit more luxury can use the Sauna, but it must be booked 4 hours in advance because it’s not always open.
The Eco Resort can host up to 100 people: there are about 15 bungalows, each of them can host 5 people, and others, a bit smaller and ideal for glamping, will be available soon.
There is also a restaurant, a small farm with donkeys, goats, 4 deers, a garden, and a small church built with the same style as the rest of the resort. The Eco Resort is built on the bank of a small river whose waters are crystal clear but freezing cold. If you are brave enough you can swim there.
Since the structure is becoming quite popular, it’s better if you book your room well in advance, especially if you want to stay there in summer, the peak season. This is the official website and this is the page on Booking.com. The price per night is not too high if you keep in mind that it’s an Eco Resort.
The last thing worth a mention is that the staff is really really friendly.
How to get to Eco Resort Beneath Velika Planina

The structure is not far from the Ljubljana airport but once you land it’s better if you rent a car since there is no public transportation to and from Stahovica, the place where there is the Eco Resort. Furthermore, a car will allow you to visit the beautiful Velika Planina.
What about you? Have you ever been in an Eco Resort? How did you like it? I’d love to read your feedback in the comment section.
