What are the rules for obtaining a Chinese driver’s license?
The International Driving Permit (IDP) is NOT recognized in China. This means that to drive, you must obtain a Chinese driver’s license. Currently, there are two options: applying for a long-term license or a short-term temporary license.
- Long-Term Chinese Driver’s License: This type of license is available only to those who hold a valid Chinese residence permit. To obtain it, you must convert your foreign driver’s license, undergo a medical examination, and pass a written theory test. The long-term license can be used to rent vehicles and drive private cars, and it is renewable.
- Short-Term Chinese Driver’s License: This type of license is available to travelers entering China as tourists. It is valid for up to 90 days, or the duration of the visa, whichever is shorter. It cannot be renewed and only allows you to drive rental cars. To apply, you must visit the local Vehicle Administration Office (车管所 – Chēguǎnsuǒ).

- No. Unfortunately, China does not recognize the International Driving Permit (IDP), so at the moment the IDP is not a valid document for driving in the country.
- How long does the registration process take?
- The process typically takes 10 business days, but in some cases it may take longer due to local authorities and document verification times. It’s better to apply at least two weeks before departing for your trip.
- What documents do I need to provide?
- You need a valid, non-expired driver’s license from your home country, a valid passport, and 4 passport photos.
- Can I drive anywhere in China?
- No, you cannot drive everywhere in China. For example, you cannot enter Tibet without a special permit (as I explained here), and even with that permit, self-driving is not allowed; you must be accompanied by an authorized guide. Other regions in China are closed to foreigners, and places like Xinjiang may present additional challenges because in all gas stations, only a Chinese ID card is accepted as valid identification, which can make refueling difficult for foreign travelers.
