CHINA BEGINS USING ANAL SWAB TESTS
Li Tongzeng, a doctor working at Beijing's Youan Hospital states that "anal testing may increase the detection rate of infected people".
The new test has already been used in Beijing
HOW DOES IT WORK
The test, reserved for high-risk cases, involves inserting a 2.5- to 5-centimeter swab into the rectum, which is then tested for the presence of the virus.
"I've done two anal swabs, every time I did one I had to do a throat swab afterward -- I was so scared the nurse would forget to use a new swab," one Weibo user joked.
"So lucky I returned to China earlier," one user wrote. "Low harm, but extreme humiliation" another person noted.
Professor Francis Chan noted that stool testing has been underutilized "The virus was still replicating in the feces of half of the study participants after they’d cleared it from their lungs"
NOT FOR EVERYONE
According to what the Chinese state TV explained, health authorities would not plan to make extensive use of the anal swabs tests
