Outlawed in 1912, foot binding was the custom of applying tight wrappings to the feet of young girls. This would break their bones and permanently deform their feet.

Today there are still a few women alive since in some remote areas this practice continued until the 1950s

Before foobinding was banned, as much as 40% of all Chinese women had bound feet. The percentage reached about 100% among the upper classes
