For some reason. not all those who visit Venice, take the time for a day (or half-day) trip to Burano. Well, if you are planning to visit Venice, don’t make the same mistake!
Why should you visit Burano Island?
To put it simply: because Burano it’s a beautiful island and it’s just 45 minutes from Venice. You won’t find nearly as many tourists as in Venice and you’ll definitely fall in love with the atmosphere of this tiny island.
Things to do in Burano in one day
Maybe you have seen some pictures of Burano but you didn’t know they were actually taken there. If you have seen some pictures of brightly-painted houses of Venice, well those pictures were taken in Burano. In fact, the main reason to visit this island is to admire the beautifully colored houses of the fishermen.
Why are they so colorful? There are several explanations but one of them is that it was easier for the fishermen to recognize their homes from the sea. The colors of the houses followed a specific system. Today if someone wishes to paint their home, he must send a request to the local government, who will respond by making notice of the certain colors permitted for that lot.
A good thing about visiting Burano is that there are fewer tourists than in Venice. If you don’t like the crowds just take the Vaporetto boat to Burano.
In the main square, you can also see the Leaning Bell Tower. Eating in restaurants is generally slightly cheaper on the island than in Venice. Here you can find some good deals for the hotels in Burano on Booking.com.
The handmade lace of Burano
Burano is famous for its handmade lace. Lace is part of the tradition of Burano. Back in the 1500s, the women of Burano started stitching lace. Each woman specialized in a single stitch (there are 7 stitches in total)and each piece would have to be passed from woman to woman to finish.
That’s why one handmade lace centerpiece for a tablecloth takes so long to make.
I asked the old woman you see on the picture above how long does it take to finish a lace and she said that it depends, but it could take as long as three months.
If you want to buy one, keep in mind that most of the lace you can buy today are not hand made. If you really want to buy a hand made one be prepared to pay a lot. In Burano, you can visit the Museum and School of Lacemaking.
